Frequently Asked Questions

  • What services do you provide?
Spirit Reins partners licensed mental health professionals with horses to provide mental health counseling to children and families impacted by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including abuse, neglect and other complex trauma. Our therapy teams use a combination of traditional therapeutic interventions and innovative approached like equine-assisted psychotherapy to help children feel and experience safety, undo the shame associated with experiences beyond their control, and build healthy relationships.
  • What is Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and why is it effective?
Equine-assisted psychotherapy is an experiential form of psychotherapy that involves horses. A licensed mental health professional working with an appropriately credentialed equine professional partners with suitable horses to address psychotherapy goals set forth by the mental health professional and the client. Due to their nature as prey animals, horses are hard-wired to sense subtle changes in their environment. This unique sensitivity makes them highly responsive to a client's behaviors and emotional states. The biofeedback of the horse provides the equine professional and therapist with information and therapeutic opportunities while working with the client. Through building a relationship with horses, clients gain insight into their own verbal and nonverbal behaviors, as well as behavioral and relationship patterns. The beneficial interaction between humans and horses provides our clients with the opportunity to learn how to set healthy boundaries, practice safe vulnerability in relationships, restore their voice, and release the shame associated with their story.
